Switch on Shropshire was a £4.79 million project, aimed at providing broadband access to businesses and the community of Shropshire.

The 3-year project run by Shropshire County Council was funded by Advantage West Midlands, Rural Regeneration Zone and European Regional Development Fund grants.

The project ended in March 2007, with a second project that offered a grant to businesses looking to embrace wireless technology.

The community IT aspect of the project has continued as part of Shropshire County Council. Shropshire Broadplaces offer communities and businesses access to broadband.

Phase 3 project has now ended.

Sutton Maddock who recieved an SOS grant.


For the last four years Switch on Shropshire has helped over 500 businesses in Shropshire move onto Broadband and develop their respective e-commerce strategies. The WIFI Businesses Project, concentrated on 'developing Wireless ICT capacity to remove barriers to new markets, employment & training'.

A Grant of £3500 (plus own business contribution of £500) was available towards Wireless ICT equipment, Training and Consultancy.

Over 400 business in Shropshire have received a Switch on Shropshire grant. The success of the project has been tremendous, with hundreds of business benefiting from a broadband connection, new hardware and enhanced or new E-commerce services.

Unfortunately the funding has now finished for this type of business grants.

The Switch on Shropshire has had a significant impact on many people in Shropshire. Over 400 businesses have benefited from connectivity, website development and hardware, while 35 communities have received equipment, software and expertise which has made a real difference to people's lives.
