Rural Regeneration Zone (Regional Funding)

The
Rural Regeneration Zone is a new regeneration initiative, started by Advantage West Midlands (AWM), the Regional Development Agency, to target regeneration funding and activity. It covers specific geographical areas of Herefordshire, Shropshire and west Worcestershire, which have been identified as the most vulnerable rural areas in terms of general prosperity in the West Midlands region.

The overall vision for the
Rural Regeneration Zone in 2020

"is of a connected rural area with a strong local identity, a rich quality of life for all, a healthy environment, and a strong economy"

What are the priorities for action for the Rural Regeneration Zone?

The Rural Regeneration Zone has identified a number of Activity Themes which describe the focus of the current and future work of the Zone. They are:

  • Sustainable Business Growth – mainly through funding the two Business Links in the Zone to target rural start up businesses and those ready to grow.
  • Diverse and High Value Economy – for example through supporting the creative industries and tourism sectors.
  • Accessible and Responsive Learning and Skills – particularly through investment into training facilities.
  • Improved Connections – for example through funding Switch on Shropshire
  • Sustainable Sites and Premises – by investing in industrial and business sites and premises.
  • Sustainable Resource Use – by promoting environmental excellence and investing in the environmental economy, including environmental industries and the land based sector.
  • Sustainable Communities – focusing particularly on the role of Market Towns as social, economic and cultural centres; investing in multi-use community facilities; seeking funding for building the capacity of the voluntary and community sectors; affordable housing; making a stronger link between the Health Sector and the regeneration of the Zone.
  • The Rural Regeneration Zone Board brings together people from the Public, Private and Voluntary Sectors. It invests money from Advantage West Midlands and supports partners to access finance and resources from other sources. The Board is supported by a team of officers that is based in Ludlow.

Is there any other criteria which may affect my application?

As this project is European Objective 2 funded, if you are not in the eligible area of RRZ you may be in what is called a transitional area of Objective 2.

  • Further details about Objective 2 are available here
