Search Engine & Email information

When using the internet the two key features you willl come across are Email and Search Engines.

Search Engines

The most common and probably the best way of finding the information you require on the internet is by using what is known as a Search Engine. You can also search for images, online communities, news and groups.

Definition:

Search engines are very large databases that contain information about web pages. Search engines are automatically updated by special programs called "robots" or "spiders" that search the World Wide Web (www) for new content and then report their findings to the database. There are many different web search engines that you can use to do a search. Some of the most popular ones are found below. Ask your Broadplace Co-ordinator if you need help using a search engine.

We have compiled a list of the most commonly used search engines:

Email & FREE web-based email accounts

What is email?

Email, short for electronic mail, allows you to send digital messages to anyone else with an email account. Sending email consists of accessing the Internet, logging into your email account, entering the email address of the person you wish to mail, typing out your message, and clicking "send."

When you sign up to use the internet your ISP (Internet Service Provider) should give you access to a personal email address ie. john-smith@web-provider.com

If you are using the internet through other access points such as an internet cafe, library or Broadplace it is unlikely you will be given an email address.

Not to worry, there are companies who provide FREE web-based email accounts. This means as the email account is hosted on one of their servers you can access the account online from anywhere in the world and it's FREE.

Two of the top providers of FREE web-based email accounts are:

Hotmailwww.hotmail.com
Yahoowww.yahoo.com
  • Please find attached a PDF from the Switch on Shropshire Technicians explaining the benefits of a Hotmail account and how to set up and use both Messenger and Netpassport.
